I’m currently working my way through the book of Romans and a few things have struck me:
1. How significant the book of Romans is to understanding and living the true Christian life.
2. How insignificant the book of Romans is today in the life of the church and living the Christian life.
3. How secularised modern Christianity has become in pursuing answers for life.
-We go to a church service once a week to seek personal inspiration and encouragement.
-We go to counselling, courses or conferences to seek tools and helps to overcome our problems and struggles.
-We go to prayer ministry or seek deliverance from demons.
-We listen to messages and read books that will help us do things better and feel better about ourselves.
-We sin and fall and then give up, run away, compromise, blame others or make excuses.
Yet, dependence on the cross of Jesus and obedience to the eternal truth of God’s Word is either given mere lip service or relegated to irrelevance in a so called complicated modern world.
In stark contrast, what does God’s Word zero in on when telling us how to think, live and grow?
“Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must CONSIDER yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do NOT PRESENT your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but PRESENT yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”
The Truth – DEAD to SIN and ALIVE to GOD
Through the cross of Jesus and being united with Him in His death and resurrection – we are DEAD to sin and ALIVE to God! In Christ we are new creations!
The Application – CONSIDER and PRESENT
CONSIDER – think as a reality – don’t wish or hope – believe the truth – that this is who Jesus has saved you to be and who you now are. The past no longer defines you. Sin no longer defines you. You are dead to sin and alive to God.
PRESENT – give, apply and devote yourselves not to sin but to God and Christ likeness. Genuinely and intentionally choose righteousness. Present yourselves to living according to your salvation and who you are in Christ. If you are now In Christ, you have the power of His Spirit to exercise your will and apply your faith according to the truth.
The Result – sin shall have NO DOMINION over you.
When you “consider and present,” sin loses its control. You do not have to give into sin because now you have power over it through Christ and can choose against it.
So when you are struggling with temptation… When you need to choose between repentance or continuing in sin…. When you have a choice to follow the world or obedience to the Word…. When you need to decide if to follow your own desires or the conviction of the Spirit….
CONSIDER and PRESENT!
Don’t make excuses or pass the blame. Don’t consider yourself still ruled by sin and then continue presenting yourself to its deception. Don’t be a victim. NO! Be a victor.
Consider and Present yourself according to the truth of your faith in Christ and the power of the cross in your life.
And sin shall no longer have dominion over you!
